How to test loyalty offers without eroding trust
Experiment with earn rules and promotions ethically: cohorts, transparency, and guardrails that protect your brand.
Testing helps you learn faster—but loyalty touches trust. Randomly changing points values without explanation can feel unfair even when legal.
Define what you are learning
Pick one hypothesis: double points on weekends, a new redemption tier, or a referral bonus. Measure incremental behavior against a holdout group when possible.
Be transparent when customers notice
If a test visibly changes balances or rules, publish dates and eligibility. Surprise and delight works for gifts; surprise point math feels like a mistake.
Protect vulnerable segments
Avoid predatory patterns: do not target confusion or urgency in ways that exploit urgency bias. If a test increases complaints or refunds, stop early.
